About Us

HM Land Registry is a UK government department created in 1862 to register the ownership of land and property in England and Wales.

We safeguard land and property ownership worth more than £8 trillion, including more than £1-1.5 trillion of mortgages. Our Land Register contains more than 26 million titles, which show evidence of ownership, covering 88% of the land mass.

Our vision is: “A world-leading property market as part of a thriving economy and a sustainable future.”

Our purpose is: “We protect your land ownership and provide services and data that underpin an efficient and informed property market.”

Our values are:
• we have integrity
• we drive innovation
