About Us

HMP Whitemoor is a high security prison located in the market town of March, Cambridgeshire. The prison is built on the site of an old railway yard and was opened for use in 1991. It holds a mixture of category A and B prisoners and only accepts prisoners serving more than four years on their sentences.

HMP Whitemoor has a capacity to hold 458 adult male prisoners. The prison focuses on both settlement; which involves helping inmates make positive use of their time whilst serving long sentences, and resettlement; reducing risk of reoffending on their release.

One wing, known as the Fens unit at HMP Whitemoor is specifically designated to manage prisoners with personality disorders. The Fens unit is a therapeutic unit holding up to 70 prisoners with personality disorders, working in partnership with Cambridge and Peterborough Foundation Trust to deliver one-to-one and group therapy.

HMP Whitemoor also houses a close supervision centre (CSC). It is part of a centrally managed national strategy administered by the directorate of high security at Prison Service Headquarters. It aims to provide the most dangerous, disturbed and disruptive prisoners with a more controlled environment to help them develop a more settled and acceptable pattern of behaviour.

We have a segregation unit that holds 18 prisoners. This unit is for prisoners that are unable to locate on main residential wings. This could be for several reasons such as: they have offered violence, caused disruption to the regime or it could be that they need to locate there for their own safety. It’s a more structured environment and whilst located in the segregation they do not have contact with other prisoners they have a structured regime to follow. They cannot walk around the unit freely; they are escorted by staff in a controlled manner to access their regime entitlement.

Adjacent to the segregation unit is the Bridge Unit. The bridge unit houses 12 prisoners and is designed to help reintegrate prisoners that have been segregated for a long period time back into normal location. They work closely with a psychologist and prison officers and have targets they have to achieve before they are considered to return to normal location.
