How to write a cover letter

Writing a cover letter is an important step in the job application process as it allows you to introduce yourself, highlight your qualifications, and express your interest in the position. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to write an effective cover letter:

Header:

Include your contact information at the top of the cover letter, including your name, address, phone number, and email address. Optionally, you can also include the date.

 

Recipient's Information:

If you have the hiring manager's name, address the letter to them directly. If not, you can use a general salutation such as "Dear Hiring Manager" or "To Whom It May Concern."

 

Introduction:

Start with a strong opening sentence that grabs the reader's attention and mentions the specific position you are applying for.

Briefly introduce yourself and mention how you learned about the job opening.

 

Body Paragraphs:

Use 1-2 paragraphs to highlight your relevant skills, experiences, and achievements that make you a strong candidate for the position.

Provide specific examples that demonstrate your qualifications and match the requirements listed in the job posting.

Tailor your cover letter to each job application by emphasising the most relevant experiences and skills.

 

Why You're Interested:

Explain why you are interested in the position and the company. Research the company and mention specific aspects that appeal to you, such as its culture, mission, or recent achievements.

Express enthusiasm for the opportunity to contribute to the company's success.

 

Closing Paragraph:

Reiterate your interest in the position and summarise why you are the ideal candidate.

Mention that you have attached your CV for further consideration.

Express appreciation for the opportunity to apply and indicate your willingness to provide additional information if needed.

 

Closing Salutation:

Use a professional closing such as "Sincerely," "Best regards," or "Yours faithfully," followed by your full name.

If you're sending a digital copy, leave space for your signature above your typed name.

 

Formatting:

Keep the cover letter concise and to the point, aiming for no more than one page.

Use a professional font and maintain consistent formatting with your CV.

Use standard business letter format with left alignment and single spacing.

 

Proofread:
