About Us

Hightown Housing Association About us: At Hightown, we're a housing charity that builds homes and support people. We were formed in 1967 by a group of highly-committed volunteers in Hemel Hempstead. In the 1960's, Ken Loach's 'Cathy Come Home' BBC drama held a critical mirror up to the worsening housing crisis and in response, volunteers and church groups came together to form housing associations. It is unlikely that our founders, could have imagined that over 50 years on Hightown would become a leading regional provider of affordable housing, support, managing over 7,000 properties and 85 care and supported housing services.

We were one of the first housing providers to join the 'Care in the Community' movement in the 1980's and has operated supported living schemes and care homes since 1983. In Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire, we continue to provide high-quality care and support to adults with learning disabilities and mental health problems, women fleeing domestic violence and adults and young people who are homeless.

We currently manage over 7,000 homes and employ over 1,000 full and part time staff from our head office in Hemel Hempstead. We have an annual turnover of £84 million and a development programme that will deliver around 450 new affordable homes each year.

Once our houses are built, they are let to people who cannot afford to buy or rent at full market values. The majority of our properties are offered to people on local authority housing lists to rent. We also manage homes to let at intermediate rents, for people saving for a deposit, and shared ownership homes, which help people make their first step on the housing ladder.

Mission: Hightown is a charitable housing association operating principally in Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. We build homes and support people.
